In an Oct. 13 ruling, U.S. District Court Judge Daniel P. Jordan agreed to Hinds County’s request to terminate the consent decree on the Henley-Young Patton Juvenile Justice Center in Jackson. The decree, which ordered the jail to improve its conditions, stemmed from a 2011 class action lawsuit filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center and Disability Rights Mississippi. The suit alleged “inhuman and unconstitutional practices” at the facility, “including regularly isolating children in small cells for 20-23 hours a day and subjecting them to sensory deprivation.” JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, RESIDENTS FILE LAWSUIT OVER WATER CRISIS Children “languished in their cells, receiving sporadic access to educational services and counseling services,” according to court records. Rice Sharing Is Not Empowerment – Soludo Knocks Politicians

Image
The Governor of Anambra State,  Charles Soludo   has warned politicians against gifting foodstuffs to the people in the name of empowering them. The Governor narrated that sharing foodstuff is not the same thing as empowering the people as the given foodstuff would finish and the people will be back to square one. Instead, he advocated training and entrepreneurial programmes that can make the people work for themselves and earn for survival. According to him, teaching people how to fish is better than giving them fish. “Politicians and some other people are doing what I call phantom charity; sharing bags of rice to youths is not empowerment but rather, giving them food for the day because the next day, they will be hungry. “We will give you the skill and training. Our agenda is to have one youth with at least two skills. That is the future of Anambra, Nigeria and Africa.” We Will Allocate More Funds For Training Soludo promised that his government will make more funds a...

‘Call Jane’ looks at a pre-Roe world through one woman’s abortion journey

Image
“Call Jane” is a good example of how a few questionable choices can muddle an otherwise-powerful story, with the recent HBO documentary version of these events,  “The Janes,”  outshining this fictionalized dramatic account. The portrait of an underground abortion network pre-Roe v. Wade is obviously timely, but its slightly askew focus blunts the overall impact. With a teenage daughter, she and her lawyer husband (Chris Messina) are expecting a later-in-life baby, before a health scare reveals a heart condition that makes giving birth especially dangerous for her. Joy initially applies to the hospital board for permission to terminate the pregnancy, only to have her petition dismissively denied by the all-male panel. That leads her to a clandestine abortion network, and ...
